More often than not, our homes have those doors which are just plain and flat, with not much character or style to add to the table. These mostly serve their basic purpose of securing a room or an area, without really contributing to your interior’s overall appearance. If you’re looking to change that, then this article may offer you some big help without costing much. Here are some ways to make the best out of your hollow core wood door!
Adding texture to your flat door
You can buy textured wallpaper to make beadboard doors out of your flat hollow core doors! Measure up how you want the inside panels to be, and then accurately cut and install your wallpaper in that inside area. Cover the sides of the wallpaper by introducing a thin wooden border that encloses it around the panel. Paint the rest of the door in the colour matching your wallpaper and you have yourself a nice beadboard door!

Creating a panelled look
There is nothing more classic than panelled wood doors. These are mostly made from solid wood, but that does not mean you can’t transform your hollow core doors to look similar to them! Again, measure accurately where you want to place the panels. Use painters tape to indicate the outer and inner border of each panel (one outer square and one inner square per panel). Apply a light coat of the door’s actual colour first before adding the accent colour to make sure this colour blends nicely underneath the tape. Once dry, you can now paint in your accent colour.
Once this is done, remove the tape, and then proceed to add tape to the inner square borders, and then another inner square border, as done earlier. This will create an illusion of an elevated panel. On the outer border use the accent colour, and the base colour on the inner border to blend nicely. For this section, mix your base colour with your accent colour to make it lighter. Paint over the area, and then once dry, remove the tape. You should now have a flat door that gives the illusion of a panelled door.
Accessorising your door
There is nothing more helpful than a simple change of hardware. Change your doorknobs, latches, and even the colour to match, and then you can have yourself a refreshing look for your door, in a minimalistic way.
If you are at home and thinking of ways to elevate your home’s interior design, be sure to give this a try and make the best out of your hollow-core door!
